Discover N°12 Milk Oolong Tea

Milk oolong, also known as Jin Xuan oolong, is a prized variety developed by the Tea Research Station of Taiwan through over 20 years of meticulous cultivation research. Renowned for its light, creamy taste and delicate floral and fruity notes, milk oolong boasts a smooth texture and lingering sweetness that has garnered acclaim among tea enthusiasts worldwide. It’s worth noting that some teas marketed as “Milky Oolong” or similar names may be enhanced through additional artificial flavouring. These enhancements create a stronger milk flavour, which might not be as prominent in the pure, natural Jin Xuan/milk oolong tea.

Historical Background

Since 1954, the Tea Research and Extension Station of Taiwan has been conducting trial cultivations, where scientists and tea masters study, research, and experiment to improve tea plantations and develop new and better cultivars. After more than forty years of cultivation, in 1981, the Tea Research Station promoted Test Number 2027 as a successfully cultivated variety, officially naming it Taiwan Tea No. 12. Professor Wu, who was also the director of the Tea Research Station, gave it a marketing name after his grandmother, "Jin Xuan." The main production areas are Nantou and Chiayi. The tea leaves are large and oval-shaped, with sparse serrated edges, slightly thick flesh, dark green and shiny, and strong adaptability. It can be said to be a quite popular tea variety, with a pure and smooth taste, accompanied by a natural hint of milk candy aroma, making its flavor distinctly different from Qingxin Oolong.

A Perfect Pairing of Tea and Cookies

At first, the tea smelled a bit sweeter than I expected, but it pairs perfectly with shortbread or cookies. I highly recommend trying it with cookies. The tea leaves are rolled into little balls that unfurl in the infuser, and I enjoyed it for over five brews. It's a very impressive tea!

    Good value organic tea

It seems to have a higher roast level than the milk oolong I've tried, but it has a pleasant sweet cream aroma. I also tried the cold brew recipe they recommended, and it's really refreshing on a hot day! I'm now a fan of cold brew!
